Martin Carthy – High Germany (Folk)

As another war in the Middle East looms closer, this time as the Axis of Evil attacks Iran, Rebel Voice offers this anti-war song from a bygone age. Will we ever learn?

Rebel Voice

This is a very popular standard on the folk circuit in Ireland and beyond. It tells of a young Englishman leaving his pregnant sweetheart behind as he goes off to fight in the Spanish War of Succession. It’s amazing just how many anti-war songs there are in the folk world, many harking back to conflicts fought hundreds of years ago. You would think that the lesson would have been learned by now but no, sadly, humans never seem to learn by the mistakes of those who fell before.

On the bright side, we do get some great folk songs from the turmoil and suffering; think clouds and silver lining (although we could probably do without any more of them). Enjoy.
