The Nez Perce – A Hunted First Nations People Of Dignity

The story of Chief Joseph and his refusal to bow to the treacherous US Federal government is the stuff of legend. The pursuit of his people by US Cavalry detachments makes for a great story with an all too familiar and heart-rending ending.

The treatment of the indigenous people by the colonials from Europe is shocking. First Nations people were treated as objects, with women and children being slaughtered by fanatical US troops. The Nez Perce suffered, as did all other native tribes.

The following piece looks at the story of the Nez Perce and their attempt to flee the injustice of US control. It’s an intriguing insight into one of the most talked about tales of the ‘Wild West’. Perhaps, someday, the Nez Perce will see some form of justice for all that they have lost.
