This initiative from China could be an important step in forging stronger links between the Far East, Europe and greater Asia, both in terms of trade and culture. Any such progress should be welcomed, as when barriers are broken down, then citizens are less likely to want to slaughter one another. The experience of the EU, flawed as it is, is still an example of this tendency towards greater acceptance.
A regulated, yet highly efficient, ‘Silk Road’ could be a means to ending the suspicions that exist between East and West, suspicions based on ignorance of other peoples. It is to be hoped that no other political entity, perhaps with delusions of global dominance, will attempt to obstruct this positive process.
