In this folk classic by the rock giants, we have the vocals of Sandy Denny of Fairport Convention. It was an impromptu track casually hit upon and recorded by all concerned. It’s the only track recorded by Robert Plant and Jimmy Page in their Led Zeppelin days that featured a guest vocalist. It refers to JRR Tolkien’s Lord of the Rings, a popular book with the group. Jimmy Page had never played the mandolin before this track and it’s an example of his musical versatility and genius.
