This is a shocking story of a young girl, Nyalong Ngong Deng Jalang, who was sold as a bride to the highest bidder. The girl, aged 16, was exchanged for cows, cars and cash. The man who ‘bought’ her already has wives. Although this practice may be culturally acceptable in South Sudan, where the transaction took place, it cannot be said to be justified.
The girl has now no chance of getting an education or living her own life. She has been effectively turned into chattel, to be bartered. Her ‘owner’ has the right to sell her on if she displeases him. It is modern day slavery, with elements of both physical and sexual abuse. Rebel Voice is of the opinion that this tragedy clearly demonstrates that not all cultural norms should be respected or allowed.
