Nurses Hunger Strike in Demand for Health System Funding

Here we have a story that has gone largely unnoticed in the west. The Chiapas region in southern Mexico, from whence came the Zapatistas, has a largely indigenous population.

The Mexican government has, for some time now, been degrading the health services available to the people there. When nurses spoke out publicly to condemn the government’s policies towards health provisions, 14 were fired. Irregularities have been discovered, by the Auditor General, in the distribution of allocated public funds.

Nine nurses began a hunger strike to highlight this issue. They are now entering their second week of protest. They are brave individuals who deserve our support, as do all the impoverished people of Mexico, and those who stand in defence of them.

I wish them success. I wish them health.
