There always seems to be something almost perversely romantic about prison breaks. It’s admirable that inmates locked up securely and kept under close watch can manage to evade their jailers to reach freedom. When POWs succeed, we cheer for them and Hollywood makes movies about them. When ordinary criminals try, we might still feel a sense of both astonishment and wonder, which may somehow translate into solid appreciation.
However, it’s easy to forget that many of those who escape were originally put in prison for awful crimes. They were not all likeable people such as Andy Dufresne from The Shawshank Redemption (who was convicted of murder). Murderers, rapists, arsonists and even plagiarists (heaven help us) will have escaped from their confinement. Yet we are fascinated.
The following takes a look at just ten of those prisoners most notable for escaping and remaining free, although some may have died in the attempt. Rebel Voice wonders if you will still feel squishy about prison breaks after watching this.
