You can no more be a socialist Zionist than you can be a meat-eating vegan — Mondoweiss

Gideon Levy is a lonely voice of sanity in an Israel that has veered to the lunatic far-right. In a recent article Levy described the terminal decline of the Zionist left as represented by Meretz, the Civil Rights Party.[1] Also worth reading is an article by Ron Calili on the same theme. 1. I had reservations about Gideon Levy at one point but having seen more of his interviews since, believe he genuinely cares for the Palestinians. He has run a gauntlet of hate in Israel that few could withstand and after some interviews has to lay low even employing bodyguards. Yet Israel still brag about being the ‘only democracy in the Middle East’. Along with many other Israeli boasts, the claim is empty. I suppose ‘they’ haven’t ended his career like so many others, probably not for the want or trying. Craig Murray managed to fight them off, with the help of his many regular readers who raised over £100,000 to settle the litigation against him, even though he had said nothing wrong.
Gilad Atzmon, the world acclaimed saxophonist is being taken to court by the Campaign Against Antisemitism founder Gideon Falter, a ‘charity’. The charity commission appear to be extremely lax for some causes ……
Norman Finkelstein has recently had to withstand a violent arrest by US police, even though Dershowitz already ended his public teaching career, it appears trying to make him homeless wasn’t enough for the devious lawyer.
There is a clear pattern that has emerged during recent years. If you are of Jewish background and you criticise the State of Israel, you better watch out. Limited criticism is fine, it can be deflected. Straight talking won’t be tolerated because previously, being a Jew would render accusations of ‘anti semite’ as useless. Gideon Falter and Dershowitz are trying to change that and I for one will be supporting him.

  2. Gideon Falter is a very curious character, both obsessive and paranoid. I have a theory that if you look hard enough at something, you will eventually find something to complain about or find fault with. Falter and the CAA are a classic example. He must trawl incessantly to find instances where someone has slurred his religion.
He needs to get a life. People of all denunciations are sneered at, insulted or made to feel worthless in as mundane activity as going shopping. Whether you are too fat, too skinny, too small or tall and also, here in the UK, if you are a Muslim and wear typical clothing. Sure, Jews get unsavoury comments but in some areas Catholics and Protestants don’t get along, but they don’t demand that their detractors are all jailed.
Anti Semitism has been deliberately blown out of proportion, primarily to curtail criticism of Israel. If Gideon Falter needs to live in a society where different people don’t mix and you can be free of snide comments, we know where he could go. However, like those who have violently taken over Palestine, he would have no right to be there, and certainly not to be part of an exclusive group that oppresses and stops those people having the type of life that we all want. One where we can have dreams and aspirations, where we can be safe and where anyone can practice whatever faith they choose or none at all. There is something very disturbing about any group of people that think they are somehow superior. Maybe Mr Falter should address this issue rather than keep complaining about a child like habit of name calling. When we were at school we can all remember ‘sticks and stones may break my bones but words can never hurt me’. Maybe we could introduce ‘sniper fire’ into that little ditty?
